In recognition of the range of vocations represented among our students and the associated skills our graduates will require, Mattersey Hall offers three degree streams: a BA (Hons) in Christian Leadership, a BA (Hons) in Biblical Studies and Theology, and a BD (Hons).*
The three degree programmes each have their own distinctive focus and learning outcomes. They broadly share a common first year (with the option of Biblical Hebrew for BD students). This enables students to settle into college life, and to work with faculty advisors and the college training department to clarify their abilities and interests before finally choosing a study pathway.
In the first year, students take a range of modules – from ‘Christian Worldview’ to ‘Understanding the Bible’, from ‘Christian Doctrine’ to ‘Lukan Perspectives on Mission’. One of the highlights of the year is a two-week cross-cultural Missions Trip. All first year students have the opportunity to study New Testament Greek. First year BD students also have the option of taking Biblical Hebrew.
In the second year, BA students study a range of elective modules (chosen from a wider selection), from both the vocational Christian Leadership pathway and the Biblical Studies and Theology pathway. These are chosen with a view to which of the two BA programmes the student intends to pursue. BD students also choose from this same wider selection, as well as biblical modules with a significant original languages component.
In the third year, BA students finally choose which degree programme they will complete. They again study a range of ‘elective’ modules, selected to best facilitate their developing sense of vocation, strengths, and the ministry pathway they wish to pursue at the end of their undergraduate training. There are plenty of options, designed so that each student can customise their course to meet their own specific needs.
Some students may wish to pursue only part of the full degree programme, usually because they intend to spend less than three years in college. This particularly applies to more mature students. For these students, it is possible to complete the first year of the college programme and be awarded a University of Wales Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE) in Christian Ministry.** Alternatively, it is possible to complete the first two years of the college programme and be awarded a University of Wales Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE) in Christian Leadership or Biblical Studies and Theology.
Mattersey Hall is not a purely academic institution. It also focuses on preparing graduates for Christian life and ministry in its broadest sense. Because of this, all undergraduate students pursue a vocational college diploma course as well as their degree programme. These courses are primarily made up of six Spiritual Emphasis weeks (or Intensives) spread across each academic year. These comprise a ‘College Week’, a two-week cross-cultural Missions Trip, as well as a range of other subjects. Specialist tracks in Youth Leadership, Music and Worship and Creative Arts are also available. Upon successful completion of their course, each student also receives a college certificate or diploma as well as their degree – the full three-year course leads to an advanced Diploma in Christian Ministry (or Youth Leadership, etc.). A one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Christian Ministry is also available for students that have successfully completed an undergraduate programme in another institution. This comprises a bespoke suite of modules chosen by the student from the modules available across all three college years.
