About the Graduate School PDF

Among the many changes in the British educational system over recent years has been the rise and rise of graduate education.

Once a minority interest, relevant to only a few professional students, the Master’s degree has become a much respected and highly desirable qualification which reflects its holder’s advanced professional training or specialist knowledge and ability in a more closely defined area of study. If a Bachelor’s degree builds into students the necessary critical skills and imparts to them the information they need for a broad, general understanding of their discipline, it is really at Master’s level that they begin to engage seriously with scholarship in a precise and detailed way. Master’s degrees today are an effective preparation for doctoral research, but also quality free-standing qualifications which can open additional doors for employment.

Andrew Davies Teaching students - Mattersey HallMattersey Hall Graduate School offers so much more than a degree programme – we embody a whole academic culture, which provides a coherent research focus, facilitates improved staff-student interaction and networking and enables more efficient administrative management, resulting in a vastly enhanced student experience at both academic and personal levels. Our Graduate School operates in close cooperation with the School of Theology and Religious Studies at Bangor University, which awards all our degrees, including MA, MTh, MPhil, PhD and DMin, as well as our postgraduate certificates and diplomas.

BA (Hons) in Theology by Distance Learning PDF

Mattersey Hall introduced a Distance Learning degree in the winter of 2007. This UK-validated degree has now been developed into a BA (Hons) in Theology validated by Glyndwr University. It may be pursued in full time or part time mode, taking three or six years to complete respectively. It follows a fairly structured timetable that all your fellow students will be following at the same time, as well as the opportunity of joining a Google Group where interaction with other students is encouraged. In this way, we hope to foster a strong sense of community, aware as we are that distance learning can be a lonely pursuit. This degree is designed to provide advanced and spiritually enriching education and training for those in ministry such as pastors, missionaries or church leaders who can’t leave their families, work and ministry to pursue a residential degree. Credits from other institutions can be transferred into the first and second levels of the degree if they meet certain qualifications determined by the college and Glyndwr University.

For further information on the programme, please download our brochure here.

MA in Biblical Studies PDF

MA in Biblical Studies

The MA in Bibliical Studies seeks to provide an extensive knowledge and critical understanding of selected areas of Biblical Studies using the literature and methods that are at the forefront of the discipline. You will develop a good working knowledge of a range of exegetical and hermeneutical skills, useful both in ministry and academic settings. It is taught during our two-week teaching block in September plus a one-week teaching block in January. In part time mode, this programme is a three-year course, which requires attendance at class sessions for two consecutive years in both September and January.

In the September of your first year, you will take two modules, and then one further module in January. In the second year you will take a further two options: one in September and one in January. You will normally write a single 4,500 word essay for each module. In the third year you do not need to attend the college for classes but will work on your dissertation under the guidance of your supervisor. Additionally the MA is available as a one year full-time course. Full time students will take three modules in the September block and two in January, progressing onto their dissertations in late Spring and can expect to be present on campus for at least 2-3 days every week during semester time.

Of the five taught modules, Research Methods, Perspectives & Resources and Exegetical and Hermeneutical Methods are both compulsory. All the other modules are options and are listed below. It is expected that most of these will be available at some point over the duration of your studies, and a good selection of them will be taught during each of the teaching blocks that you will attend. Dr Robin Routledge

'One of the great strengths of the teaching faculty here at Mattersey Hall is its commitment to research and teaching in the fields of Biblical studies and Biblical theology; something that, over the years, has received international recognition. In this newly validated postgraduate programme we want to give expression to that level of expertise. I am very happy that we can now offer the opportunity for students to explore the riches of God’s Word in this way; and trust that those who graduate from our MA in Biblical Studies will go on to make significant contributions both to further research and to ministry in today’s world.'

Research Degrees - MPhil and PhD PDF
Mattersey Hall offers a range of research degrees, in association with the School of Theology & Religious Studies at Bangor University.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Both MPhil (Master of Philosophy) and PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) research degrees are examined entirely by dissertation and oral examination (or ‘viva’) - there is no taught component. The MPhil dissertation runs to approximately 60,000 words and is awarded to candidates who have critically investigated a topic (in the process demonstrating their understanding of appropriate research methodologies) and undertaken a systematic analysis of data, resulting in a contribution to knowledge in their general field of scholarship. PhD candidates must have undertaken research resulting in an independent and original contribution to knowledge, normally of 80-100,000 words and of publishable quality. In both cases the thesis must be a work of substance which offers a genuine contribution to global knowledge.

Registration for the MPhil is normally for 2 or 3 years part time or 1 or 2 years full time, and for the PhD it is 4 or 5 years part time or 3 years full time. We are able to offer research supervision, sometimes in combination with staff from Bangor University, in the following areas:
